Distant Suns

by Sam Manicom

Adventure in the vastness of Africa and South America

Book Description
'Sam Manicom’s dynamic third book transports you to Southern Africa, South and Central America in an action-packed three year voyage of discovery...a thought-provoking mix of scrapes and encounters with people which illuminate some moments of true darkness... acute observations on everything from human behaviour, to remote and stunning locations. Distant Suns grabs you, enthrals you and spits you out as a convert to the dream of overlanding these amazing continents.'
Reviews

‘It’s been a pleasure to read as it makes me feel as if I’m there seeing the people and landscape that Sam describes. He has a gift for painting pictures with words, which is rare amongst long-distance riders… In summary, a damn good read, not to be missed.’ Dave - BMW Club Journal

‘…as the book progressed and the story unravelled, it developed into a truly involving and enthralling read. Distant Suns doesn’t just document the journey, Sam also describes cultural differences, traditions and lifestyles of the various countries they cross, whilst painting a vivid picture of the terrain they cross… A really great read that’ll doubtless give you itchy feet…’ TBM - Trail Bike Magazine

'Distant Suns' is based on what Sam acknowledges are Birgit’s wonderfully descriptive diaries. The result is a strangely powerful combination of Sam's already masterful writing with the added perspectives of a travelling companion who is both in-tune and adding a different melody line to the rhythm of their journey together. Nich Brown - The Road Magazine

"...he decided to start his trip in London, England, to ride up to Nordkapp, Norway, and from there to continue overland to Australia, and to return to Canada via Los Angeles.

This book has maps and towns not even mentioned in other books. It has excellent coverage and inside information on the 'Big three'-Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Sihanoukeville and has a huge color fold out map of the entire country on one side and a detailed map of Phnom Pen on the other, The safety and traveling tips are unique and worth the price of the book alone. Africa: Against the Clock on a Motorcycle

Book cover

by Werner Bausenhart

Paperback

"Born in Germany in 1937, Werner Bausenhart has been an avid traveler all his life, but his longing for faraway places only increased when he discovered the joys of adventure motorcycle touring. Upon retiring from the academic staff at the University of Ottawa, Bausenhart discovered that his penchant for travel had become a full-blown addiction. He circumnavigated both North and South America before tackling a marathon trek through Russia, China, and Eastern Europe. The books he wrote about these trips soon became popular among other like-minded riders.

His latest binge continues the quest, beginning in London and proceeding down the west coast of Africa to Cape Town, South Africa, returning along the east coast via Cairo. As with Bausenhart’s other books, he tells some good stories, and includes a lot of practical tips and information for those dreaming of similar adventures. Bausenhart’s desription of his journey provides a fairly recent account of travel conditions in this part of the world and he is able to give it the perspective of a seasoned and savvy traveler."

Against the Wind

by Ron Ayres

Paperback (1997)

Motorcyclist :

"Given the topic, just about anyone could have written an interesting book, but Ayres' storytelling skills enable him to weave together a tale so engrossing, many people will read it from cover to cover without putting it down. I did. I even cancelled a 600-mile motorcycle ride to finish it."

Keystone Motorcycle Press :

"Ron Ayres coaxes the reader through pitfalls, heartbreaks and innumerable breakdowns, both mechanical and mental, writing in a simple, sincere and enticing style that is neither droning nor pedantic. What seems to the uninitiated a meaningless, silly game between middle aged men sharing their mid-life crises en masse becomes, when told by Ayres, an elegant mental contest against the ultimate challenger, one's own will."

Against the Clock

by Ron Ayres

Paperback - 256 pages illustrated edition (July 1, 1999)

"Whitehorse Press couldn't resist when Ayres offered to write a new book about his shattering the Guinness Record for visiting the 48 contiguous states in 6 days and 31 minutes, then setting a new record by adding Alaska in exactly 7 days and 20 minutes after starting in Kittery, Maine on June 7th, 1998.

Against the Clock is the story of Ayres' historic ride, demonstrating the importance of teamwork in achieving a difficult objective many thought to be unattainable. It thoroughly captures the flavor of the ride as it happened: the internet community's reactions to the daily, hourly, even minute-by-minute updates, the frantic and chaotic e-mails concerning his condition, his mishaps, his personal and public victories, and finally, Ron's personal observations about his condition and concern for others"

Reviewer: Tracy Fifer, Denver, Colorado July 22, 1999, in reference to the first edition:

"Dr. Frazier covers all the essentials in preparation for a motorcycle trip to Alaska. His book is full of helpful hints ranging from what to take to where to gas-up. The book is compact and easy to carry in your tank bag. Alaska by Motorcycle is an easy and enjoyable read. I read several other books about traveling to Alaska but found Alaska by Morotcycle the most complete and accurate guide as to what to expect when traveling by motorcycle. Another book I found helpful was The Alaska Highway, An Insider's Guide (revised edition) by Ron Dalby. I disregarded the Mile Post half-way through our 3 week trip and relied on the books by Dr. Frazier and Ron Dalby. I believe that Dr. Frazier has another book about motorcycling through Europe which will undoubtedly inspire future motorcycle adventures."

with a Harley
Davidson

By Károly Kanyó

From SuBariders.com:

"Around the World on a Motorcycle. Once upon a time, eighty years ago, two Hungarian adventure-minded young men took it into their heads to circumvent the globe on a motorbike. The dream became reality as Zoltán Sulkowsky and Gyula Bartha set out on a Harley-Davidson, complete with a sidecar, to discover the world. Their journey lasted eight years on end, during which time they visited fifty-eight countries while touching on six of the seven continents. Our intrepid travelers made the acquaintance of Charlie Chaplin and Greta Garbo and were amiably received by the then presiding American president. The desert Bedouins, wild beasts on Sumatra, and the arid Peruvian pampas weren't nearly so hospitable. Nevertheless, they and their faithful German shepherd, a veritable canine globetrotter, completed their unique mission."

Away From My Desk: A Round - the - World Detour from the Rat Race, the Tech Wreck, and the Traffic Jam of Life in America

by Rif K. Haffar

Paperback (2002)

Editorial Reviews:

"Traveling mainly by motorcycle, the author traverses 45 countries on six continents in this memoir, experiencing both fascinating and harrowing travails during a one-year journey. With a healthy mix of contemporary and historical perspectives, new insights are provided on typical tourist destinations like the Taj Mahal and the Trevi Fountain. vivid and engaging accounts showcase the destinations not just as tourists see them, but as residents experience them as well, realistically portraying floods, earthquakes, and civil unrest."

Mark Hammond from San Francisco CA, USA:

"This guy is not a rider -- he takes a leisurely luxury tour aboard an ST1100 from Lisbon to Istanbul and that's it. The bike is shipped from Istanbul to Bombay. Haffar didn't even know what a carnet is! So his bike -- which any rider guards with his or her life -- gets stuck in Bombay, and he evidently lacks the wherewithal and ingenuity to extract it. Travels thru the Middle East, Asia, Oceania, South America, Central America, and the U.S. are accomplished via public transit, plane, and rental cars. Worse still, this book has the worst variety of insipid amateur travelogue -- unless you like tedious crybaby complaints about bad tea, inadequate restrooms, and tepid showers. The author is too busy looking for his next cup of tea, about which he is bound to offer some banal observation. The little good that can be said of the regrettable work is that Haffar will occasionally spin a pleasant phrase."

Behind Bars in Mexico: Handle Bars, Strip Bars, and Cantina Bars (Perfect Paperback)

by Mike Waterman

Paperback - (April 10, 2009) 292 pages

Editorial Review:

"Mike Waterman was a newly ordained MBA graduate late in 2001. The terrorist attacks of 9/11 messed up the economy and ruined the once lucrative job market. With zero employment prospects on the horizon and saddled with $60,000 in student loan debt, Mike did what anyone else in his situation would do...he ran away. With mere scraps of money to his name and along with his friend Jason O Brien, the two pointed their ill equipped and ill prepared motorcycles - and ill advised selves south from the state of Arizona into Mexico. This is the ultimate armchair travel book. You will see, hear, feel, and smell the good, the bad, and the ugly, without having to live it. In a near complete mosaic of all that can and will happen on a 70 day romp through Mexico (and parts of Guatemala), does. Run-ins with the cops, dueling doped out locals, persevering mechanical breakdowns, combating temporary destitution, wandering into adult clubs, and sampling some of the best beer in North America...all, that at the end of the day, turned into an experience of a lifetime."

Review by Jo Gordon, The Arizona Bologna

"Behind Bars is like listening to your good friend tell slice of life stories in a small party setting. You feel that you are living in Mike's shoes the entire trip, and are privileged to share the travel adventure, even though some parts make you cringe, others make you blush... !"

Paperback (2002)

Synopsis:

Bitten By The Bullet is the story of how Steve Krzystyniak and Lily, his partner - both long-time global wanderers who now live Waiheke Island in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf - came to set up and operate an innovative motorcycle tour company that takes small parties through the northwestern Indian state of Rajasthan. One of the heroes of this story is the Royal Enfield Bullet, a classic fifties-style motorcycle that is still produced today in India and which is Steve and Lily's bike of choice. A fast-paced narrative with two storylines - the main one follows a particular tour group's adventures over a three-week period, which is underpinned by Steve Krzystyniak's account of how he and Lily took on the bureaucracy of India in order to achieve their dream

Paperback (1997)

Synopsis

The Grand Trunk Road stretches 1600 miles, from Calcutta to the North-west frontier. Some 50 years after, it served as an escape route for 15 million refugees, following Independence and Partition, the author travels the road on a 1940s Enfield Bullet motorbike.

Mattpope from Guildford, UK said on HUBB:

"With an interest in Bullet travel, I have to mention 'Bullet up the Grand Trunk Road' by Jonathan Gregson and 'Bitten by the Bullet' by Steve K (sorry forgotten his surname). First one is a very readable historical account of modern Indian history on a trip from Calcutta to Peshawar. Bit heavy going if you want to hear all about the bike though. Second one seemed more of a plug for Steve's tours."

From Hugh Caldwell, USA a recommendation to us:

"...I think this is a wonderful book full of local color and history. I couldn't put the book down. I read it in two nights."

"Intrepid journalist Patrick Symmes sets off on his BMW R80 G/S in search of the people and places in Ernesto "Che" Guevara's classic Motorcycle Diaries, seeking out his own adventure as well as the legacy of the icon Che would become, Symmes retraces the future revolutionary's path. And on the way he runs out of gas in an Argentine desert, talks a Peruvian guerrilla out of taking him hostage, wipes out in the Andes, and, in Cuba, drinks himself blind with Che's travel partner, Alberto Granado."

Destinations Highways B.C., Canada

Destination Highways website

"Destination Highways B.C. is the most comprehensive guidebook ever produced for the motorcycle enthusiast touring British Columbia (Canada).

...a written description of the unique riding experience each Destination Highway offers. 'At a Glance' gives you get a succinct profile of the DH’s most noteworthy features. 'Access' tells you how to get there. 'On the Road' is an in-depth, kilometre-by-kilometre chronicle of the ride.

What about roads that aren’t quite worth 'travelling to, to journey on' but are worth checking out if you happen to be in the neighbourhood? In addition to the 85 Destination Highways, DH BC guides you to 100 Twisted Edges. Located close to DHs, these may be quiet, bypass routes that offer alternatives to major highways, access roads to out of the way lakes, parks or tourist attractions, or just winding dead-enders that gravel out in the middle of nowhere.

Of course, there’s more to motorcycling than smooth, twisty, traffic-free roads. Both you and your machine need fuel and maintenance. Whether you’re in immediate need of a bike shop, accommodation, campground, restaurant, gas station, or the nearest pub, Destination Highways B.C. answers the call, providing indispensable service information of special importance to motorcyclists, all shown on our easy-to-use LO-LITE maps. Spiral-bound and specially sized, Destination Highways B.C. fits a standard tank bag map window. With a wealth of information clearly displayed, Destination Highways B.C. provides all the tools you need to find and enjoy your favourite Destination Highway."

Destinations Highways Washington, USA

"What people say about DHWA

"This, bar none, is the best American motorcycle guide we've read. Hopefully, it won't take too long for Bosworth and Sanders to survey the rest of the roads in the US because everyone with a passion for waltzing a bike through beautiful roads needs one of these guides." --RoadRUNNER, Motorcycle Cruising & Touring

"Lots of BMW riders are going to be heading for Washington State next year. And there are lots of great roads there and across the border to the north in British Columbia, Canada. We're not talking just nice roads like the Blue Ridge Parkway, we're talking scenic paved roads zooming over majestic mountain passes similar to the European Alps, twisting around volcanoes such as Mt St Helens and zipping through shadowy canyons as impressive as any in North America. There's no question there are great roads in the Northwest. The only question is which ones do you have time for? My personal suggestion is to get a copy of Destination Highways Washington. Personally, I'm impressed with the amount of information in these guides. These guys have done their homework and it shows. I know you're going to find DHWA impressive, so I also suggest you get a copy of Destination Highways British Columbia." --David L Hough author of "Proficient Motorcycling" "More Proficient Motorcycling" & "Street Strategies" (in BMW ON)"

Dodging Potholes

Book Description

Dave Barrett rode from his home in Southwest Germany to the Black Sea, stopping en-route at the orphanage and school for mentally handicapped children in Moldova. He was so moved by his experience in the orphanage that he decided he wanted to make a personal contribution, which he has now done by writing a book about motorcycling in Eastern Europe, which naturally includes the ride to the Black Sea and back.
The book is not a “how to” guide, but a travelogue containing a collection of memories and experiences made, which will hopefully show that similar tours are possible by anyone owning a motorcycle with the desire to travel.
All proceeds from the book go directly to the orphanage and school for mentally handicapped children in Moldova, one of the poorest nations in Europe, and indeed the world.

8 Around the Americas on a Motorcycle

by Werner Bausenhart

Paperback

"...on July 1, 1997 author Werner Bausenhart set out to follow his dream of circumnavigating the Americas by motorcycle, following a figure eight pattern. The top loop, around North America, would be made in a counterclockwise direction. The bottom loop, around South America, would be clockwise. This entertaining book is the day-to-day account of his journey, in which he went as far north as Deadhorse, Alaska, and as far South as Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. The author offers insight into matters specific to motorcycle travel: the documents required, maintenance of the bike, border crossings, transportation of the bike by air freight, accommodations and security for bike and rider. Bausenhart, a retired teacher who had only recently started riding motorcycles, demonstrates that anyone with a strong desire can enjoy motorcycle adventure travel."

Full Tilt

Click for an enlarged view of the cover

by Dervla Murphy

Paperback - 256 pages (March 1987)

Editorial Review:

This book recounts a trip, taken mostly on bicycle, by a gritty Irishwoman in 1963. Her route was through Yugoslavia, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and ended in New Delhi. She carried a pistol, got sunstroke, and suffered the usual stomach disorders. She endured bad accommodations but reaped much local hospitality, too, including a dinner with the Pakistani president. Most of the book concerns the high mountain country of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

John Roberts from Nefyn, Gwynedd, Wales, UK said on HUBB:

"Try Dervla Murphy's 'Full Tilt' about her journey from her home in Ireland to India on a push bike. Written in 1966, with particular attention to Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Hindu Kush, she had a particularly high opinion of the Afghans and the Pakistanis."

Going the extra mile

by Ron Ayres

Paperback: 160 pages (December 2002)

Book Description

"Best-selling author Ron Ayres has written the first book to share the proven advice of long-distance veterans with all riders who are looking to extend their range on a motorcycle. See how the Big Dogs manage fuel consumption, speed, and rest breaks to maintain a high average mileage."

Reviewer: tfmurphy3 from Gardnerville, NV United States

" Coincidences? Sure, they happen. Picture this. I planned a 2500 mile 4-day ride through sUtah, Arizona, and New Mexico. Needed something to read and Ron"s book had just shown up from the publisher, so I threw it in the saddlebag without even opening it.

I finally got to it while parked for the night in a dirty motel in a seedy town in southern Utah. Imagine my surprise when I saw Ron on the cover traveling the same sort of roads I had just been on.

After reading this book, my advice to you is buy it, read it and follow it. If you plan on covering a lot of superslab on your rides, you need this book. My only complaint (small) is that Dan Kennedy at Whitehorse Press needs to use more color in these books. Some of the scenery in Ron's book deserves to be seen in glorious 4-color."

Amazon.com Reviews
Reviewer: gragnew@cs.com from Southampton, UK . 23 January, 2001

A great book for bikers and students of the 'American Way'. A thoroughly enjoyable book which is out and out fun to read. Having spent two years in the States I found it encapsulates all that is American, from east coast wariness, mid west openness to southern red necks. It sums up the Country. As a Harley owner the riding comments were sublime. From the viewpoint of a 'lover of the American way' the analysis is perfect.

Hell's Angels: A Strange and Terrible Saga

by Hunter S. Thompson

Paperback - 273 pages (September 1996)

Synopsis
Amazon.com:

"The author's harrowing and critically acclaimed first book chronicles his year riding with the Hell's Angels and other motorcycle gangs, an "experiment" that ended when he was beaten nearly to death by a group of Angels."

Reviewer: Thom Ryan from St. Paul, MN

...In 1965, Hunter S. Thompson shed light on one of the darkest subjects of the 60's. The Hell's Angels Motorcycle Riders. Thompson shows little remorse for infiltrating the place[s] where no other journalist dare tread, and even chronicling the experiences in a book he had to have permission to research and write, from the very subjects of the book. Readers will be shocked, surprised, and maybe sickened while they delve from the safety of time passed into the world of the most notorious two- wheeled gang in history. However, readers will also get a history lesson. A lesson obtained with real blood, sweat, and fears.

2nd edition with colour photographs

Review by Glynn Roberts, UK Horizons Unlimited Meeting Organiser

"Excellent self published book. Gives a very honest account of life on the road, fear, boredom, terror, pain, love and humour, good and bad days of riding, it's all there. Particularly liked the mention of other travellers on the road so often not mentioned in many books. They may only be in your life for a short time but nearly always leave a lasting impression. Good reading for anyone."

Book Description from www.sam-manicom.com

"This is a story of amazing Africa, it's people and some very good reasons why not to fall off a motorcycle.

Riding across fourteen countries from the island of Jersey to Cape Town, this eye opening tale catapults you into Africa.

Sam's plans frequently don't work out as they should, and every twist in the road leads him to new challenges and surprises. The journey throws disaster in his way, seeing him jailed in Tanzania and hit by a serious wipeout in Namibia. Land Of The Long Wild Road:
New Zealand Travel

by Bob Goddard
paperback (2004)

Book Description:

"Land Of The Long Wild Road is an off-beat, observant and humorous journey around New Zealand. Bob & Viv Goddard ride two small off-road motorcycles on gravel tracks, drovers' routes and four-wheel-drive trails into the wilderness of this fabulous and unspoiled country... they survive three-months and 11,000 kilometres of frequent soakings and occasional roastings as they battle with the elements. Lured onward by the landscape's awesome beauty and wide open spaces, their journey through rain forests and desert trails, up volcanoes and across river beds proves to be a life-changing experience.

In remote outposts, sheep stations and towns, they meet larger than life characters who offer old-fashioned friendship, wonderful hospitality and endless entertainment. Full of vivid flashbacks and improbable bodge-ups, their humorous take on life, New Zealand, motorcycling and the art of marital maintenance, this tale is as much a voyage of discovery of themselves as the land down under.  Whether you are thinking of visiting New Zealand, planning a motorcycle trip, or just enjoy travel from the comfort of your armchair, Land Of The Long Wild Road will grab you by the seat of the pants and put a smile on your face."

Life is a Road
The soul is a motorcycle

by Daniel Meyer

(paperback)

From Amazon
About the Author

"Daniel Meyer is a pilot, engineer, skier, and an avid motorcyclist with a few hundred thousand miles under his belt. When asked to describe himself, his usual answer is, 'I'm a six-foot, three-hundred pound, blue-eyed Texan; supremely confident and strong as an ox, though I usually don't smell like one.'"

Book Description

"'I was on a lonely stretch of road. There were no lights other than the moon and stars, and I had not encountered any traffic in at least 10 minutes. Far ahead of me a figure stepped out of the brush and stood on the shoulder of the road. The figure was still far out of my headlight range, but was visible as a stunning and marvelous silhouette in the bright moonlight.' Capturing the essence of the riding experience through a series of adventures and a candid look into the author's mind, this book explodes the myths and shows the reader something few books have before-the complex motivations of an avid motorcycle rider."

Ewan McGregor, Charley Boorman

Editorial Reviews from Amazon:
It started as a daydream. Poring over a map of the world at home one quiet Saturday afternoon, Ewan McGregor - actor and self-confessed bike nut - noticed that it was possible to ride all the way round the world, with just one short hop across the Bering Strait from Russia to Alaska. It was a revelation he couldn't get out of his head. So he picked up the phone and called Charley Boorman, his best friend, fellow actor and bike enthusiast. 'Charley,' he said. 'I think you ought to come over for dinner...'

From London to New York, Ewan and Charley chased their shadows through Europe, the Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Russia, across the Pacific to Alaska, then down through Canada and America. But as the miles slipped beneath the tyres of their big BMWs, their troubles started. Exhaustion, injury and accidents tested their strength. Treacherous roads, unpredictable weather and turbulent politics challenged their stamina. They were chased by paparazzi in Kazakhstan, courted by men with very large guns in the Ukraine, hassled by the police, and given bulls' testicles for supper by Mongolian nomads.

And yet despite all these obstacles they managed to ride over 20,000 miles in four months, changing their lives forever in the process. As they travelled they documented their trip, taking photographs, and writing diaries by the campfire. Long Way Round is the result of their adventures - a fascinating, frank and highly entertaining travel book about two friends riding round the world together and, against all the odds, realising their dream."

Please let us know of any books you think we should list here, and if possible, your comments on the book.

We very much appreciate it when you buy your books through our website, the small commission does help to defray the costs, and especially the enormous amount of work that goes into the newsletter and running the bulletin board. Thanks!

Please note that reviews are generally supplied by the vendors. I have NOT read all the books! Someday, I hope. My comments will have (Grant) appended.
